In 1963, this stunner was first runner-up to Alice Alebe, Miss Nigeria. However, Alice could not make the international pageant so a replacement was needed.
The automatic choice was Gina Onyejiaka. Unfortunately, she was considered too ugly and a search began for another representative. Sixteen year-old Martha Bassey was selected. She too was disqualified for being underage.
Gina Onyejiaka had the requirements. However, because she was considered not beautiful, she had no sponsorship to the international event. In fact, as far as the judges and organisers were concerned, Nigeria was not taking part in the event.
Gina took a bold step. She sponsored herself to the pageant in London. She was dazzling.
She has since then become an inspiration to many. She since went on to become a television presenter later on in life. And retired as a government aide in her state of origin.
